Hello, reader. My name is Kim; I come from the great state of
Wisconsin. I’m currently in my M.Eng year in Electrical Engineering
at MIT. M.Eng is a fifth year following undergraduate graduation in
which you delve deeper into a research problem and write a thesis to
earn a Master’s degree. I’ve had a great time at MIT so far. MIT has
opened up a lot of opportunities for me during my breaks as well.
Thanks to the awesome people and programs of MIT I've been to Germany,
Honduras, China, and some neat areas of the US! (The related programs
are MISTI, DLAB, 6A International, and DEAPS.)
One of my favorite parts of MIT is the people. One group of people I love hanging out with is the residents of Random Hall. I lived there for all four years of my B.S. degree, and it was amazing. Random is the smallest dorm, with 93 students. I hesitate to say ‘dorm’ though; they’re really more like a very large, quirky, comfortable family. It’s the place I learned to make chain mail and the place I pulled all-nighters just to have good discussions. For me, it was the place at MIT where I felt at home. MIT is such an intense experience that finding such a home is essential. It doesn’t have to be in a living group, but it was for me. I know other people who found their ‘home’ in their softball team or their fraternity. No matter where they it, it helped them through the tough times and positively shaped their MIT experience.
I wavered back and forth between Electrical and Mechanical Engineering during my first two years at MIT. Eventually I decided on Electrical Engineering, and I think that was the right decision for me. Feel free to ask me about classes in either major though. My favorite class has been Power Electronics. It’s one of those classes that encourages students to learn through building and creating (while simultaneously being incredibly rigorous!)
I have had a great time at MIT, but there is so much here that I haven’t seen! Feel free to ask me questions about anything I mention in the blogs, and also *anything* else about MIT that you are interested in. I love finding out about MIT’s clubs, activities, etc. and I will find whatever information you’d like.
